How to Get to Balos Lagoon from Chania

Introduction

Balos Lagoon is one of the most photographed places in Crete. With shallow turquoise water and white sandbars, it feels like a tropical paradise.

If you are staying in Chania, visiting Balos is one of the most unforgettable day trips.

Distance from Chania

Balos Lagoon is located about 55 kilometers northwest of Chania.

The journey usually takes around 1 hour and 30 minutes depending on traffic and road conditions.

Driving to Balos

Driving to Balos could be tricky as you need to rent an SUV to reach the parking area.

The route to Balos first follows the main road toward Kissamos. After that, a dirt road from Kaliviani leads to the Balos parking area. The whole area from Kaliviani to the top of the hill is a protected area in the program Natura 2000. The small and narrow rocky road will take you up to the top of the hill, from there you will have to hike a small path that will take you to the beach.

Important tips:

  • Drive slowly on the gravel road as even with an SUV there is no insurance or road service at that area.
  • Bring water and sunscreen and snacs.
  • Wear comfortable shoes for the walk down to the beach.
  • Avoid leaving the beach midday as the temperature is high at that time and going uphill will be challenging.

Alternative: Boat Tour

Some visitors choose to reach Balos by Ferry from Kissamos port. You can still climb a few meters up to the view point to enjoy the panoramic view but you don’t have to do the whole cliff. That way you get to visit also the Gramvousa island which played a role during the Greek War of Independence including a fortress built by the Republic of Venice in 1579 and was used as a pirate base in the 19th century.

Using the ferry is much easier than driving, as you can park your car at Kasteli port safely and free. That way you will avoid the rough road, eliminate any chance your car will be damaged, and save a lot of energy from going down and up the hill. Plus you can rent a smaller car to reduce the cost of the trip.

If you don’t want to take the ferry there are also private boats that will take you to both beaches on your own pace.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Balos Lagoon is early in the morning or late afternoon when there are fewer visitors and the temperatures are cooler.

Additional tip

After your trip there you can relax and have lunch/dinner at one of the best restaurants in the area. The “Gramvousa Restaurant” at Kaliviani is the place to go but remember to book a table before you go there to avoid the queue as its very crowded.
